Multiplayer games over the network, in which players control some weapons, are one of the most popular areas of the gaming industry, so the originator of the genre, World of Tanks, has many analogs.
Given the popularity of WoT, the emergence of its clones, in which instead of tanks, you can control a ship, airplane, or combat robot, was a matter of time, with the course of which such projects have become a lot, for any, even the most refined taste.
What similar to World of Tanks games exist and what they can please the user will be discussed below.
War Thunder
The online game War Thunder from developer Gaijin Entertainment, dedicated to the military equipment of World War II and the pre-war period, was launched in 2013.
Currently, the project has over 70 million registered users who can enjoy the gameplay from anywhere in the world on all existing game platforms and operating systems.
The project’s original name was “World of Planes” because it was planned to be devoted to aviation themes. Still, the expansion of the arsenal of self-propelled weapons led to the transformation of the game, which at the time of time allowed you to control the following combat vehicles:
- Ground vehicles:
- light, medium, and heavy tanks;
- self-propelled artillery units;
- self-propelled anti-aircraft guns.
- Winged means of defeating the enemy:
- single- and twin-engine fighters;
- attack aviation;
- bombers;
- jet aircraft;
- drones.
- Helicopters of various modifications.
- Combat ships:
- barges;
- boats;
- sea hunters;
- destroyers;
- cruisers;
- battleships.
The game has many plots, which are constantly updated and supplemented with new events and units of combat equipment, and various modes allow you to fight not only with other users but also with computer opponents.
World of Tanks Blitz
By its plot and game mechanics, World of Tanks Blitz can be called a clone of World of Tanks in its early version, where there are no artillery units, and tank battles take place in a more dynamic atmosphere without elements of tactical planning and positional combat.
The graphical component of WoT Blitz is also inferior to its prototype, making fewer demands on equipment and working with more excellent performance.
The project was developed by Wargaming.net in cooperation with Lesta Games and officially released on 26.06.2014. The game runs on a limited number of operating systems, including Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, and Nintendo Switch.
The project has its own unique features, such as the ability to conduct a duel in reduced gravity on the surface of the moon.
Crossout
Developed by Targem Games and released in 2017 by Gaijin Entertainment, the Crossout project takes the player to a post-apocalyptic world where survivors fight for limited resources on self-propelled combat vehicles of various designs.
It is the construction of their combat vehicles can be called a feature of Crossout because each user can collect from thousands of different parts of their machine of destruction, choosing one of the many options:
- a light and fast off-road vehicle with automatic weapons;
- a heavy, heavily armored tank with powerful guns;
- a stable and survivable truck with a variety of weapons;
- a self-propelled battering ram with an armored baffle.
These are just a few available options, limited only by the player’s imagination and the availability of spare parts, which will need to be mined in single modes and multiplayer confrontation.
Armored Warfare
Another multiplayer project developed by Obsidian Entertainment in collaboration with VK and released in 2015 under Armored Warfare is analogous to World of Tanks regarding game mechanics and story concepts.
The project’s track record includes over 5.8 million users who downloaded the application and the ability to run on major operating systems and gaming platforms: Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
The game’s fleet of armored vehicles exceeds 100 units, including the following types:
- light, medium, and heavy tanks;
- armored personnel carriers;
- self-propelled artillery units.
The game can change the appearance of armored vehicles and many exciting locations, each requiring its battle tactics.
World of Warships
For fans of naval battles, Wargaming.net and Lesta Games created a multiplayer project, World of Warships, which allows you to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of ship battles, imagining yourself a captain of a combat ship.
The original announcement of the game took place on 16.08.2011, and for four more years, one month and one day, it took the project developer to make its release, which occurred on 17.09.2015.
In the base build, the game supported only the Windows operating system, to which MacOS was added in 2016, where it became possible to run WoW through Mac Wrapper created by CodeWeavers.
Another two years later, the World of Warships Blitz game appeared, which has similarities with the base version, but is an independent software product developed specifically for iOS and Android platforms.
In World of Warships, you can charter various models of naval vessels in World of Warships docks:
- destroyers;
- cruisers;
- battleships;
- aircraft carriers;
- submarines.
There are several modes in the game:
- cooperative battles;
- random fights;
- missions;
- ranked battles;
- clan confrontations;
- challenges;
- training battles.
The arsenal of the project is more than enough to feel the atmosphere of sea battles and enjoy the game.
ARMA 3
The opportunity to fight on the side of the NATO armed forces provides the project ARMA III, released in 2013 by Czech developer Bohemia Interactive Studio and available for single or multiplayer play on Windows gaming stations.
The project provides the opportunity to conduct military operations on tropical islands in three primary story campaigns and eighteen add-ons, the last of which was released in November 2021.
ARMA III is a combat simulator, combining a first-person shooter with elements of role-playing action. It is distinguished by high-quality graphics and colorful landscapes, against the background of which the armed conflict unfolds.
MechWarrior Online
For fans of futuristic projects back in 2013, Piranha Games launched MechWarrior Online, where players can participate in battles with combat robots (mechs) in the BattleTech universe.
Starting as a mechanical warrior, the player can choose from 16 mechs in a basic configuration that can be upgraded or completely changed as they complete battles and gain in-game currency and experience.
Monthly events are held to earn additional items, in-game currency, and battle robots.
A game for fans of sci-fi universes and fans of colorful combat robot fights.
Enlisted
Launched in 2021 by Gaijin Entertainment, Enlisted is a first-person shooter with strategy elements in which the player can choose one of the following careers:
- lead an infantry squad;
- become a tank crew commander;
- fly an airplane as a pilot.
Each unit consists of several characters, one of whom can be controlled directly, while the rest follow orders following artificial intelligence algorithms.
All attributes, including equipment, weapons, and ammunition, are recreated quite accurately and allow you to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of combat fully.
The game can be run on a personal computer with any operating system and is also available on PlayStation and Xbox game platforms.
Gear Up
In 2013, Swedish studio Doctor Entertainment AB provided an opportunity for cartoon graphics fans who want to play tanks, launching through the network of early access Steam project Gear Up.
The game is similar to Crossout’s concept of building a fighting vehicle, providing complete freedom for design thinking when creating deadly but fun, self-propelled weapons.
The developers claim that the number of possible vehicle variants in Gear Up exceeds 1 million, which allows to keep users’ interest in the project for a long time.
Walking War Robots
A variant of the world where disputes are resolved in fights between giant mechanical robots is the project War Robots, released in 2014 by the Russian company Pixonic and distributed under the Freemium model.
The game can be launched on iOS and Android platforms and a computer with the Windows operating system.
Players can choose one of eight maps for a fight, which can take place in one of three available modes.
Combat robots can be upgraded and given 11 special abilities to gain an advantage over their opponents.
Steel Armor: Blaze of War
Among the single-player games, Steel Armor: Blaze of War, released in 2015, is an example of a tank simulator with a non-linear plot with an ultimate goal and complete freedom of choice to achieve it.
The action in the game tells about the armed conflict between Afghanistan, Iran, and Angola, thanks to which you can choose a tank from one of the following countries: USSR, Iran, Angola, or Iraq.
Battlefield V
Those who want to take a virtual part in the events of the Second World War should enjoy the game Battlefield V, the plot of which unfolds on the territory of occupied Europe.
The game was developed by EA DICE and published by Electronic Arts.
Battlefield V is a multi-mode project; you can play it alone, going through the storyline, or join the multiplayer battle for critical locations, involving up to 64 players simultaneously.
ExoTanks
An attempt to look into the future and imagine what tank battles will look like in 2090 was made by a team of Russian developers, Digital Universe, releasing the project ExoTanks in 2020.
The game provides single and multiplayer modes, in which players must participate in the confrontation between the Confederacy and the Syndicate, fighting for control of the planet.
There is an opportunity to choose between armored vehicles of one of three classes: defender, assault, and engineer; each has unique characteristics, capabilities, and tasks in battles with opponents.
You can improve your combat vehicles and increase their characteristics as the game progresses.
Each class and certain types of weapons have different controllability indicators, so when changing the tank will have to adjust to the features of its movement, guidance and firing.
PlanetSide 2
The multiplayer project with the most extensive simultaneous user participation in battle is PlanetSide 2, an online shooter released by Daybreak Game Company in 2012 and still has loyal fans.
The scale of battles in PlanetSide 2 is impressive – up to three thousand users on foot, in land vehicles, or aircraft can participate at the same time.
The essence of the confrontation between the three game factions is classic – the struggle for resources that allow you to build your citadel and improve the ammunition and weapons of the player.
Given the number of simultaneous online actions players, the project requires a processor game station, which should have at least 4 cores, and better more.
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS
The original project titled PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS was released by Brendan Green in collaboration with PUBG Studio on March 23, 2017, when the game became available in Early Access on Steam for Windows PCs.
Subsequently, the number of systems and platforms on which the project can be launched has expanded to include Android and iOS, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
The essence of the idea is that a group of 100 people land on the island and must find weapons and transportation to get an advantage and eliminate rivals because, in the end, there should be only one left. As time passes, the safe space shrinks, forcing the players into close contact and confrontation for the right to be called the best.
