France has the most versatile tanks in the 2024 War Thunder. Almost all of them can play different roles and feel comfortable.

Tier I – S.35
Let’s start with an uncharacteristic example for the nation.
S.35 is not a bad tank for the support role. However, it is good only in this role: if you rush ahead of everyone or fight alone, flank players will quickly destroy you.
The S.35 is also very big. This is both its plus and minus. It can take a lot of damage (it has almost the best armor among tanks of this type) but is slow.
Tier II – Crusader Mk. II
A practical light tank. It is equipped with a fast and powerful cannon, which does well against many tanks from this tier. It reloads quickly as well.
In general, the machine is handy and develops a decent top speed. You can (and even need to) play it aggressively.
The tank is characterized by above-average survivability. It usually survives shots from small-caliber guns without any problems. It is also easy to control and picks up speed quickly.
On the downside: slow reverse (7 km/h) and poor penetrating shells.
Tier III – M4A4 (SA50)
Excellent medium tank—mobile, with good armor and adequate firepower. It is quite difficult for beginners, as it requires good positioning. However, you can play any role: a 75 mm gun with a convenient muzzle penetrates enemy tanks perfectly, even at a long distance.
M4A4 (SA50) has only one disadvantage.
It has no explosive filled shells.
Tier IV – M26
The M26 is France’s most versatile tank. It can play as a support or as an attack. The role of a sniper is also not wrong.
A 90 mm cannon provides versatility with a wide range of ammunition. As a rule, M26 kills vehicles with medium armor with one shot.
The disadvantages are poor low-speed controllability and the front end being too vulnerable.
Tier V – AMX-13-90
Lightweight, maneuverable, powerful.
The AMX-13-90 is equipped with HEAT-FS shells, which have no problem penetrating the armor of many tanks (except composite). However, it is unsuitable for close combat because it lacks stabilizers.
It has no armor, either.
Tier VI – AMX-30B2 BRENUS
The AMX-30B2 BRENUS is weak in head-on collisions. Still, it makes up for its excellent mobility, a maximum speed of 65 km/h, and a powerful cannon capable of penetrating the armor of even T-72-type vehicles.
Minuses: lack of composite armor, weaknesses between reactive armor plates, and lack of a transparent weapon stabilizer, which significantly impairs its accuracy.
Tier VII – Leclerc S2
Another versatile tank.
- Mobile – takes favorable positions for sniper shots.
- Powerful – quickly suppresses the enemy thanks to a 120 mm cannon.
- Resilient – vulnerabilities are well hidden.
Of course, the Leclerc S2 has some disadvantages. For example, it has no thermal imaging optics, only three crew members, and is quite slow.
But in general, the machine is good. It will suit both beginners and experienced players.
Tier VIII – Leclerc SXXI
The Leclerc SXXI has taken the best of its predecessor to the next level. The tank has excellent armor, auto-loading capability, and a large ammo bay with many effective OFL 120 F1 APFSDS ammo.
The cons are the same as the other “Leclerc”: only three crew members, there are a couple of places without dynamic armor and it is quite slow.
